The Department of Sociology at the University of Kansas is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Sociology of Race and Ethnicity.  This appointment, which will begin in the fall of 2020, will build on our long-standing commitment to critical inquiry into racial and ethnic diversity and disparity, both globally and domestically.

This search is open in terms of research emphasis, but we seek a scholar with teaching strengths in core areas of African American experience.  We would expect our new colleague to publish in major outlets, enhance our international and national research profile, and contribute to our ongoing effort to build cross-disciplinary connections with units across the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.  Applicants must have a Ph.D. in sociology in hand or a credible claim that they will soon obtain that degree.

Please check out the following recent publication by OOW member Victoria Reyes: Global Borderlands: Fantasy, Violence and Empire in Subic Bay, Philippines. 2019. Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press.

The U.S. military continues to be an overt presence in the Philippines, and a reminder of the country’s colonial past. Using Subic Bay (a former U.S. military base, now a Freeport Zone) as a case study, Victoria Reyes argues that its defining feature is its ability to elicit multiple meanings. For some, it is a symbol of imperialism and inequality, while for others, it projects utopian visions of wealth and status.

Drawing on archival and ethnographic data, Reyes describes the everyday experiences of people living and working in Subic Bay, and makes a case for critically examining similar spaces across the world. These foreign-controlled, semi-autonomous zones of international exchange are what she calls global borderlands. While they can take many forms, ranging from overseas military bases to tourist resorts, they all have key features in common. This new unit of globalization provides a window into broader economic and political relations, the consequences of legal ambiguity, and the continuously reimagined identities of the people living there. Rejecting colonialism as merely a historical backdrop, Reyes demonstrates how it is omnipresent in our modern world.

CFA: Early Career Work and Family Fellowships, October 1 Deadline

The Work and Family Researchers Network (WFRN) is seeking applicants for its 2020-2021 Early Career Work and Family Fellowships. The goal of the program is to help promising young scholars establish career successes, integrate them within the WFRN research community, and guide translation of their research to inform the work of decision-makers.  Fellows receive 2020 membership in the WFRN, conference registration, and $500 to attend an Early Career Fellowship Preconference (June 23, 2020) and the 2020 WFRN Conference (June 24-27, 2020) in New York City). To be eligible, candidates must have received their doctorate in 2016 or later and have yet to progress into tenured or secure senior level positions.  Information about the program can be found via this link, or apply directly here.  The deadline for applications is October 1, 2019. OOW Call for Volunteers

Dear Members of OOW,

Greetings from the section!  As the incoming chair, I am looking forward to maintaining our vibrant OOW community.  Our events and sessions in New York City were fantastic, and I want to thank all of you for contributing to that.  Special thanks to the OOW Council for their hard work and to Emily Barman for keeping our section on track.

This message represents our annual call for volunteers for section committees and positions.  As you are certainly aware, participating in OOW committees is both an invaluable service to the long-term health of our field and also a great way to get to know your fellow Section members.  It also offers an excellent opportunity to learn more about the workings of the section and to gain deeper insight into the perspectives and concerns of colleagues from different cohorts, different institutions, and different intellectual traditions.  We have plenty of committees to staff, so everyone should be able to find something that suits their tastes and talents. We are also looking for volunteers for OOW newsletter editors — this is a fantastic way for graduate students to become more involved with the section.

If you are new to the section (or just need a reminder), OOW has five committees: Program, Nominations, Membership, Publications, and Awards. The Awards Committee is separated into three sub-committees: the Max Weber Prize (books), the W. Richard Scott Award (articles), and the James D. Thompson Award (graduate student papers).

The Organizations and Institutions specialization at UC Riverside examines the development and contemporary structure of organizations and the institutional systems (e.g., economy, polity, law, education, kinship, and religion) in which they are embedded. The organizations component of the specialization focuses on research related to the theoretical traditions in the study of organizations, including but not limited to neo-institutional, ecological, resource dependence, network, and institutional economic approaches. The University of North Texas Department of Sociology invites applications for two faculty positions. Both positions are 9-month appointments with 2-2 course loads beginning September 1, 2020.

The first position is at the Assistant Professor rank, with a preference for a scholar specializing in race and ethnicity. The second position is at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, with area of specialization open. Successful candidates should have strong records of scholarship and a commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University of Michigan Interdisciplinary Program in Organizational Studies solicits applications for a tenure track assistant professorship position to begin September 1, 2020.  This is a university-year appointment. The deadline for receiving applications is October 1, 2019. Organizational Studies is a small (approximately 100 students) highly selective undergraduate major in the arts and sciences.
