Meet Your Council: Lisa Cohen

lisa_cohen_7697Lisa Cohen is currently serving on the OOW Section Council.  Cohen is an associate professor of organizational behavior at Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University.  She was previously a faculty member at the London Business School, the Yale School of Management and the Graduate School of Management, University of California, Irvine.  Prior to her academic career, Cohen was Principal Consultant at Terranova Consulting Group/Right Management Consultants, a human resource and management consulting firm.  She earned her MBA from Fuqua School of Business, Duke University and her PhD from the Walter A. Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley.

Professor Cohen’s current research focuses on questions about how tasks are bundled into jobs and jobs bundled into organizations: how and why do jobs and organizations look the way they do, how do they change, and how do they influence organizational success?  Most recently she has examined these issues in startups. Her most recent paper, forthcoming in Academy of Management Journal, looks at the fit between top management jobs and experience and how these interact with firm development in technology startups.  She has additional projects examining hiring and unusualness in the top management structure of startups. She has published in Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, and Organization Science.

Welcome to the third International Interdisciplinary Conference on Research on Work held 16-18 August 2017, in Turku Finland. The 2017 conference will look forward with the theme ‘Work and Labour in the Digital Future’.

The first conference on research on work, WORK2013, followed by the second conference, WORK2015 in Turku, Finland brought over 400 participants from all over the world with excellent keynote and paper sessions. WORK2017 will stand out with the interdisciplinary theme of digital future.

Two Featured Articles in RSW Available for Members

RSW is happy to report that two featured articles in the current issue of RSW can be freely accessed on the publisher’s website. Below are the titles and abstracts. The first is Robin Leidner’s study of actors holding “survival jobs,” and struggling to maintain their identities as professional actors. The other is David Orzechowicz’s study of a seemingly gay-friendly work culture at a well-known amusement park. OOW at the Movies: Post 2

From Chris Andrews – Drew University:  I saw the OOW at the Movies post and added several movies to the growing list on the Google spreadsheet, but I also thought I’d share several assignments from my Sociology of Work class that incorporate films and/or television.  Films and documentaries can be a great way for students to learn vicariously about all sorts of aspects of organizations, occupations, and work!

Gender, Science, and Organizations Workgroup

The 12th semi-annual Gender, Science, and Organizations Workgroup will take place from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Thursday, February 9th 2017 – the day of the opening evening reception for the Sociologists for Women in Society winter meetings in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The workgroup is targeted at sociologists who are already doing research on studies of gender & academic careers, scientific workplace organizations, organizational transformations to promote gender equality, etc. We are a growing, loosely organized group of sociologists who focus on science as a workplace and many workshop participants work on NSF-funded ADVANCE research projects.

Arizona Methods Workshops

OOW faculty and graduate students might be interested in the upcoming Arizona Methods Workshops hosted by the School of Sociology at the University of Arizona.  This year, we will offer workshops on survey design, R, Atlas.ti, data science, experimental designs, and machine learning.  All graduate students are welcome to apply for the Scott R.
