The Interdisciplinary Program in Organizational Studies in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks applicants with a Ph.D. for a full time Lecturer III position to begin September 1, 2018.  This is a non-tenure track position with a university year appointment.

Duties and responsibilities for this Lecturer III position are expected to include four (4) courses per year as well as departmental service, including advising undergraduate students. We seek candidates capable of teaching organizational theory at the micro and/or macro levels, research methods, and seminars on topics related to organizations.

Job Posting: TT Position in Organizational Studies Program at University of Michigan

The University of Michigan Interdisciplinary Program in Organizational Studies solicits applications for a tenure track faculty position to begin September 1, 2018. Candidates at all levels are encouraged to apply.  This is a university year appointment. The deadline for receiving applications is October 1, 2017.

Organizational Studies is a small (approximately 100 students) highly selective undergraduate major in the arts and sciences. We seek applications from a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary backgrounds in the social sciences and professional fields. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in research and teaching related to organizational theory and behavior, broadly defined. We especially seek applicants committed to undergraduate mentorship and innovative teaching methods. Joint appointments with other units at the university are possible. Applications must include cover letter, CV, statement of current and future research plans, writing sample(s), statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and evidence of teaching excellence (evaluations) and syllabi (if available).

Call for abstracts for panel entitled “Price, value and worth: Conceptualizing social practices of (e)valuation” at the International Sociological Association’s World Congress next summer in Toronto, Canada, 15-21 July 2018.  This will be one of 13 sessions organized by Research Committee 35 Conceptual and Terminological Analysis, and one of 23 sessions organized by the Economy & Society research committee (RC02).  Although the conference is next summer, the deadline for submitting abstracts is fast approaching:  September 30, 2017, 24:00 GMT.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Labor market and Economic perspectives on large-scale Migration in Sociology (LEMS)

Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) of the University of Mannheim on Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18, 2017.[1]

Theme:
Labor market and economic sociologists take notice of each other less often than common concerns might suggest. This ignorance is particularly troubling amid the large-scale influx of immigrants and refugees into established economies over the past few years in particular and the past decade in general. Among these changes, issues of employment and emergent economic activities, which both fields focus on, gain in significance and salience. Labor market sociologists demonstrate that unregulated labor markets are neither free nor fair, diminishing hopes for quick integration. A focus on the distribution of relevant worker characteristics over a range of social dimensions such as class, gender, and ethnicity allows labor market sociologists to develop more constructive views of labor market mechanisms. Economic sociologists scrutinize dynamics around the establishment of larger social objects such as industries and “informal economies”, some of which are dominated by immigrant ethnic groups. In more specific settings, economic sociologists have found evidence that ethnic diversity—an obvious consequence of migration—increases the resilience of common market mechanisms. The conference seeks to foster a dialogue between the two views in order to develop conceptual, analytical, and empirical strategies that help us study and understand the forces undergirding the recent developments and their consequences.

Job Posting: TT Assistant Professor Position at University of Iowa

The Department Sociology at the University of Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, which would commence in August 2018. We seek candidates with expertise and research interests in the use and/or development of computational statistics, big data analytic techniques, network analysis, data visualization, automated text analysis, machine learning, spatial and longitudinal analysis, demographic techniques, or other areas of social data analytics.  We seek candidates who show strong promise and evidence of ability to pursue ambitious research programs utilizing any of the analytic techniques listed above or others, and who have clearly defined substantive interests in sociology.  We are interested in applicants who have published in peer-reviewed journals, and who show promise or evidence of ability to win external research funding. We also seek candidates with excellent teaching skills or potential. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Sociology or related field in hand by August 15, 2018.

New Papers of Interest on Work and Organizations

A note from the editor of Research in the Sociology of Work

OOW members will be pleased to learn a few things about RSW, one of the section’s two scholarly outlets (sister of Research in the Sociology of Organizations, edited by Michael Lounsbury).

Volume 30 of RSW, entitled Emerging Conceptions of Work, Management, and the Labor Market, has just been published. It contains articles on a wide array of themes and topics, including organizational change in health care organizations, the workings of internal labor markets in the financial industry, the link between management rhetoric and corporate downsizing, racial disparities at work after the great recession, and the authority systems found in UK call centers.
