A note from the editor of Research in the Sociology of Work

OOW members will be pleased to learn a few things about RSW, one of the section’s two scholarly outlets (sister of Research in the Sociology of Organizations, edited by Michael Lounsbury).

Volume 30 of RSW, entitled Emerging Conceptions of Work, Management, and the Labor Market, has just been published. It contains articles on a wide array of themes and topics, including organizational change in health care organizations, the workings of internal labor markets in the financial industry, the link between management rhetoric and corporate downsizing, racial disparities at work after the great recession, and the authority systems found in UK call centers.

The Negotiating Agreement in Congress Research Grants are aimed at scholars who seek to understand the conditions under which political negotiation can be achieved (or not achieved) in Congress and other legislative arenas. The grants provide up to $10,000 of funding for each awardee, to be used for up to one year of research and writing. Applicants must have a PhD in hand by the application deadline and must hold an affiliation with a college or university based in the United States. A call for proposals for the Southern Labor Studies Association’s Biennial Meeting

Where: The University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia
When: May 17-19, 2018

The Southern Labor Studies Association invites academics, activists, archivists, and others to propose panels, roundtables, and workshops for our next conference, which will take place at the Richard B. Russell Library at the University of Georgia. The theme of the 2018 conference is “Dirty Work.” This topic encompasses southern industries (mining, timber, turpentine, farming, chicken processing, catfish, etc.); the service economy (trash collection, domestic service, nursing, food service, etc.); bound labor (slavery, indenture, and prison labor); as well as work deemed morally “dirty” – from sex work and drug-selling to policing and overseeing. Panels discussing public history, archival projects, teaching, oral history, activism, important works in progress, and digital history are welcome. Southern labor studies topics outside the “Dirty Work” rubric are welcome too. The SLSA defines southern labor and working class studies broadly. We welcome historical and contemporary topics, all relevant academic disciplines, non-academic participants, and regional as well as comparative and transnational approaches. Our hope is to assemble a broad and diverse set of participants on a wide range of subjects.

Call for Applications: Early Career Work and Family Fellowships

The Work and Family Researchers Network (WFRN) is seeking applicants for 2018 Early Career Work and Family Fellowships.

The goal of the program is to help promising young scholars establish career successes, as well as integrate them within the WFRN research community.  Fellows receive membership in the WFRN, conference registration, and $500 to attend a preconference and the 2018 WFRN Conference (to be held June 21-23 in Washington DC). Fellows will be connected with one another in periodic encounters beyond the conference, intended to facilitate collaboration and peer-mentorship. 

To be eligible, candidates must have received their doctorate in 2015 or later and have yet to progress into tenured or secure senior level positions.  Information about the program and application materials can be found at https://workfamily.sas.upenn.edu/content/early-career-fellowship-program. Economic Sociology Sections Issues Call for Junior Faculty and Graduate Students to Sign Up in Advance for Professional Development Sessions During the Economic Sociology ASA Roudtable Session, Sunday, August 13, 8:30 a.m.

 The Economic Sociology Section Council is pleased to announce Economic Sociology Mentoring Roundtables, to take place at the upcoming ASA Meetings in Montreal this August. The program will feature professional development roundtables for graduate students and junior faculty around the following topics:

  • Table 22:Journal article publishing
  • Table 23: Book publishing
  • Table 24: Navigating the job market
  • Table 25: General professional advice

These sessions have been designed to give graduate students and junior faculty opportunities to meet faculty mentors outside their home institutions and strengthen their professional development networks. The sessions will take place during the Economic Sociology Roundtable Session on Sunday, August 13th from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Palais des congress de Montréal, Level 5, 517B.
