Message from the Chair

Dear OOW Members,

Greetings!  As I begin my term as section chair, I would like to give one last thank you to Emily Barman, the OOW Council—Nina Bandelj, Tim Bartley, Beth Popp Berman, Michael McQuarrie, Giacomo Negro (Secretary-Treasurer), David Pedulla, Melissa Wooten—and all of the people who worked on our section’s program for a very successful meeting in New York City. I want to give a special thank you to the Program Committee (Laura Doering, Ryan Finnigan, Adilia James, Tania Jenkins, Ken-Hou Lin, and Steven Vallas) and Roundtable organizers (Carla Ilten, Sarah Mosseri, and Jennifer Nelson) for their hard work. Finally, please join me in welcoming our two new council members, Sarah Thebaud and LaTonya Trotter, as well as Alexandra Kalev, OOW’s chair-elect.

OOW remains a vibrant and stimulating community of scholars, and I am excited to work to continue this tradition as we prepare for next year’s conference in San Francisco. Here are a few things to keep in mind as we move into the new academic year.

1) Be on the lookout for potential members of OOW. The larger our section, the more panels we have at ASA. While OOW remains one of the larger ASA sections, we have lost a few members in recent years because the annual Academy of Management meetings have been held at the same time as ASA’s meetings. One effective strategy (aside from proselytizing in the hallways) is to sponsor students who might be interested in the section. This is inexpensive — only $5 if they are already members of ASA — and a good way to promote future membership.

2) News and announcements for the section are published in two places: the OOW blog (https://oowsection.org) and our monthly newsletter. Let me take this opportunity to thank Annika Wilcox and Laura Adler for their excellent work on these outlets. If you have news or an announcement to share with the section, please send the item to me (michael-sauder@uiowa.edu) and/or Annika (amwilcox@ncsu.edu). I will also send out occasional updates and announcements on our section’s listserv, but—to limit the strain on everyone’s inboxes—most news will be posted on the blog and newsletter.

I look forward to working with everyone this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns about the section.

Memorial for Art Stinchcombe (1933-2018)

The Northwestern University Department of Sociology invites the colleagues, students, and friends of Art Stinchcombe, and all those influenced by his work—as well as the colleagues, students, and friends of his wife, Carol Heimer—to join us as we remember Art and pay tribute to the accomplishments of one of the leading sociologists of his day. Message from the ASA LGBTQ Caucus

Hello! As we gear up for another ASA Annual Meeting, we would like to encourage you to become involved with the LGBTQ Caucus. The Caucus aims to support and empower all LGBTQ sociologists, regardless of what areas they work in. Our full mission statement is on our website: https://www.lgbtqcaucus.com/about-us. At the upcoming ASA meetings, we will have paper awards and graduate travel awards, a coffee hour, a business meeting, and a reception joint with Sociologists for Trans Justice. Outside of the Annual Meeting, you can get involved via our listserv or facebook page, or by reading or contributing to our new quarterly newsletter.* You can also help us build community by telling your colleagues about the Caucus.

Gender, Professions, and Organizations Writing Workshop

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The 17th semi-annual Gender, Professions, and Organizations Writing Workshop will take place from 9 am to 5 pm on Friday, August 9th 2019 – the day of pre-conference activities for the American Sociological Association annual meeting in New York City. Originally a workgroup of sociologists doing research on gender and academic careers, scientific workplace organizations, and organizational transformations to promote gender equality, the workshop now includes scholars of gender, professional work, and organizational change. The purpose of the workshop is to learn about the range of work that attendees are doing, to facilitate collaboration and to set aside time for writing. We encourage new and returning participants. If you’ve never come, welcome, and if you have, welcome back!

As a group, we will talk about our current research projects. This will provide information useful for exploring potential collaborative projects. There will also be designated time for writing and research. You may use this time any way you wish:  brainstorming a new paper, putting the finishing touches on a research manuscript, working with collaborators, or doing data analysis.

OOW Mentoring Meet-Up

The Organizations, Occupations, and Work Section will be organizing a mentoring meet-up at this year’s ASA meeting where graduate students, post-docs, and faculty can enjoy a discussion about shared research interests outside of the scheduling of the regular conference.  If you are interested in participating, please complete the form at the following link by May 17th.

The OOW Mentoring Committee (Sharla Alegria, Nina Bandelj, Emily Barman, Tim Bartley, and Jennifer Bouek) will match up junior and senior scholars based on shared research interests.  Matched mentors and mentees should then reach out to each other to find a mutually convenient time to meet during the ASA.
