The OOW Section Award information is now up on the website.  Nominations for the Max Weber Book Award, the W. Richard Scott Article Award, the James D. Thompson Graduate Student Paper Award and the Distinguished Career Award are due March 31, 2017.  More information about each can be found at the links below:

Congratulations to this year’s OOW Award Winners!

Max Weber Award: The Max Weber Award for Distinguished Scholarship is granted for an outstanding contribution to scholarship on organizations, occupations, and/or work in a book published within the last three years (2013-2015).

Winner: Lauren Rivera (Northwestern) for her book Pedigree: How Elite Students Get Elite Jobs

Committee: Kate Kellogg (Chair), Mike Lounsbury, Martin Ruef, Vicki Smith 


Thompson Award: The James D. Thompson Award is given for an outstanding graduate student paper on organizations, occupations, and work written in the three years prior to the award (January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2015).

Winner: Benjamin Shestakofsky (UC, Berkeley) “High-Tech and High-Touch: The Labor Behind the Screens of an Online Market.”
Honorable mention: Patrick Reilly (UCLA) “The Layers of a Clown: Career Development in Cultural Production Industries.”

Scott Award: The W. Richard Scott Award for Distinguished Scholarship is granted for an outstanding contribution to the discipline in an article on organizations, occupations and work published within the last three years (January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2015).

Winner: DiBenigno, J., and Kellogg, Katherine C. (MIT) “Beyond occupational differences the importance of cross-cutting demographics and dyadic toolkits for collaboration in a US hospital.” Administrative Science Quarterly.
Honorable mention: Mears, Ashley (Boston University) “Working for Free in the VIP Relational Work and the Production of Consent.” American Sociological Review.

Below are the OOW Section’s 2015 award recipients for outstanding scholarship in the areas of organizations, occupations, and/or work:
  • Max Weber Award (for best book):  Dan Clawson and Naomi Gerstel (both of University of Massachusetts, Amherst), Unequal Time: Gender, Class, and Family in Employment Schedules (Russell Sage Foundation).
    • An honorable mention was awarded to Nancy DiTomaso (Rutgers University), for The American Non-Dilemma: Racial Inequality Without Racism(also Russell Sage Foundation).
  • W. Richard Scott Award (for best article):  Andras Tilcsik (University of Toronto), “Imprint-Environment Fit and Performance: How Organizational Munificence at Time-of-Hire Affects Subsequent Job Performance,” Administrative Science Quarterly, 2014, 59: 639-668.
    • An honorable mention was awarded to Christina Mora (University of California, Berkeley), for “Cross-Field Effects and Ethnic Classification: The Institutionalization of Hispanic Panethnicity, 1965 to 1990,” American Sociological Review, 2014, 79: 183-210.
  • James D. Thompson Award (for best paper by a graduate student):  Brad R. Fulton (Duke University), “Bridging and Bonding: How Social Diversity Influences Organizational Performance.”
