Call for Editors – Social Currents
Social Currents is seeking a new editor or editorial team to begin a three year term that will run from January 1, 2019-December 31, 2022, with the transition between editorial offices beginning summer 2018. Social Currents is the official journal of the Southern Sociological Society and publishes six issues a year. The journal is a broad-ranging social science journal that focuses on cutting-edge research from all methodological and theoretical orientations with implications for national and international sociological communities. The uniqueness of Social Currents lies in its format. The front end of every issue is devoted to short, theoretical, agenda-setting contributions and brief, empirical and policy-related pieces. The back end of every issue includes standard journal articles that cover topics within specific subfields of sociology, as well as across the social sciences more broadly. Currently the journal accepts about 15% of its submissions and receives approximately 225-250 submissions per year.

Southwestern Social Science Association’s (SSSA) Silent Auction

I am the organizer of the Southwestern Social Science Association’s (SSSA) Silent Auction to benefit ASA’s Minority Fellowship Program (MFP). We are encouraging members of ASA to continue supporting the development and training of sociologists by donating auction materials. Each year, SSSA conference attendees are introduced to academic books through the silent auction that they are then able to consider for course adoption, use to inform their research, and engage with in preparation for courses.
I urge you to donate your book(s) or to contact your publishers and request that they donate to SSSA’s Silent Auction. 100% of the proceeds from the Silent Auction go directly to ASA’s MFP.

Open Access Archive SocArXiv Launches
SocArXiv, the open archive of social science, has just launched in beta version. Led by a steering committee of sociologists and librarians, SocArXiv is a free, open access repository for prepublication versions of papers. Created as a not-for-profit alternative to sites like Academia.edu, ResearchGate, and SSRN, SocArXiv is built in collaboration with the Center for Open Science and supported by the Open Society Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
New Program in Technology Management at UC Santa Barbara

Two Featured Articles in RSW Available for Members
RSW is happy to report that two featured articles in the current issue of RSW can be freely accessed on the publisher’s website. Below are the titles and abstracts. The first is Robin Leidner’s study of actors holding “survival jobs,” and struggling to maintain their identities as professional actors. The other is David Orzechowicz’s study of a seemingly gay-friendly work culture at a well-known amusement park. Both are provocative pieces that make for interesting reading. OOW at the Movies: Post 2
From Chris Andrews – Drew University: I saw the OOW at the Movies post and added several movies to the growing list on the Google spreadsheet, but I also thought I’d share several assignments from my Sociology of Work class that incorporate films and/or television. Films and documentaries can be a great way for students to learn vicariously about all sorts of aspects of organizations, occupations, and work!
Congratulations to OOW Member Guang Ying Mo
Congratulations to Guang Ying Mo and her coauthors who were recently awarded one of the Emerald Literati Networks Award for Excellence, 2016! Mo and her co-authors, Zach Hayat and Barry Wellman, received an Outstanding Author Contribution Award in the Book Series, Studies in Media and Communications. Their award-winning book chapter is: “How Far Can Scholarly Networks Go? Examining the Relationships between Disciplines, Motivations, and Clusters.”
