Virginia Tech invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position as Department Chair in the Department of Sociology to start fall, 2020.  The successful candidate must be tenurable at the rank of full professor.  We seek an experienced administrator and scholar with a proven record of research excellence both in publications and in external funding.

A Ph.D. in sociology is required. Areas of research specialization are open. Administrative experience at the departmental or center level and experience with graduate programs at the doctoral level is preferred. In addition, the preferred candidate should be able to engage with the criminology program such that he/she will be able to articulate and strategically advocate for the needs of this high growth area, as well as for the department as a whole.

Located within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, the Department of Sociology is the academic home of programs in Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies, and houses the Center for Race and Social Policy Research and the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention.  Each of the programs and centers has a director appointed by the Department Chair.

The department grants the B.S degree at the undergraduate level with majors in sociology and criminology.  The sociology major includes options in Research Methods, Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Social Inequality. We also offer six minors.  We have approximately 600 majors, a large majority of whom are in criminology, and 250 minors.

At the graduate level we offer the M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in sociology with available options in Africana Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies. Currently we have 33 tenured or tenure track faculty and 4 full time instructors or collegiate faculty.
