The Brown University Department of Sociology seeks applications for an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor of Sociology, to begin July 1, 2017, for a scholar with a specialization in the area of organizational studies and entrepreneurship. Within this focus, we particularly seek candidates who conceive their work broadly, and whose work contributes to the larger discipline of sociology. The new faculty member will join a growing community of scholars associated with Brown’s newly created Jonathan M. Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship and will participate actively in teaching undergraduates interested in organizational studies and entrepreneurship. A successful candidate must have an outstanding record of scholarly achievement, a proven record of research funding, and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising.

Candidates should submit: (1) a cover letter describing research completed and planned, (2) a curriculum vitae, and (3) the names of five references who would be contacted at the appropriate time by the search committee. Job Posting: Professor of the Practice Position at Duke University

The Markets and Management Studies Program (MMS) at Duke University seeks applicants for an open rank Professor of the Practice position, a non-tenure track but regular rank faculty position.

The Professor of the Practice track at Duke is parallel to the tenure track, and affords possibility for reappointment and promotion.  The position will come with an initial four-year contract that is renewable, subject to review, beginning with a start date in July or August 2017.  The position will be located administratively in the Department of Sociology with teaching responsibilities in Duke’s MMS Program.  A Ph.D. in Sociology or an allied social science field (Psychology, Economics, Management, Marketing, Organizational Behavior and so on) is required, along with two years of teaching experience.  The position will have a 3-3 teaching load, which is adjustable downward for possible administrative duties in MMS.

New Book: Nemoto on Gender Inequality in the Japanese Workplace

Section member, Kumiko Nemoto, recently published a new book: Too Few Women at the Top: The Persistence of Inequality in Japan (ILR/Cornell University Press, 2016)

Abstract

The number of women in positions of power and authority in Japanese companies has remained small despite the increase in the number of educated women and the passage of legislation on gender equality. In Too Few Women at the Top, Kumiko Nemoto draws on theoretical insights regarding Japan’s coordinated capitalism and institutional stasis to challenge claims that the surge in women’s education and employment will logically lead to the decline of gender inequality and eventually improve women’s status in the Japanese workplace.

Nietzsche & Critical Social Theory – Affirmation, Animosity, Ambiguity. 

This conference aims to bring together several areas of critical theory and practice, in order to consider their relation to the thought of Friedrich Nietzsche and the traditions of critical social theory most influenced by Nietzsche, including, but not limited to, the Frankfurt School and post-structuralism.

The conference will be held at Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union on the campus of San Diego State University. Our keynote address will be given by Dr. Douglas Kellner.

Tenure-track Organizational Behavior & Theory faculty positions opening at the Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University for appointment at the untenured (Assistant/Associate) level.  Applicants should demonstrate achievement of, or potential for, excellence in research and in teaching MBA, doctoral, and undergraduate students.  Accomplished academic training in organizational behavior or theory, strategy, sociology, psychology, or related fields is required, as well as a Ph.D. at the time of appointment (Fall 2017).  The OBT faculty at the Tepper School specialize in the areas of inter- and intra-group behavior, social networks, and organizational learning with a specific focus on inter-disciplinary and cross-level research. Priority will be given to candidates whose research enhances any of these areas and also considers organizational level phenomena.

Register now for mini-conference on “Precarious Work: Domination and Resistance in the US, China, and the World,” in Seattle   

The deadline is approaching! We invite you to register by FRIDAY, AUGUST 5, for our conference on “Precarious Work: Domination and Resistance in the US, China, and the World,” to take place on August 19, 2016 in Seattle, Washington. The conference will bring together large groups of researchers from the USA, China, and Canada, as well as scholars from 12 other countries, to present research on a wide range of topics related to precarious work.  Plenary sessions will feature local Seattle activists as well as globally noted scholars.
