The Sociology program in the Department of Social Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, invites candidates to apply for a full-time tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in Sociology. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Sociology at the time of appointment, which starts on September 10, 2020. REVIEW BEGIN DATE: 12/2/2019. EOE.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a broad and critical appreciation of the field from a critical race perspective and with an appreciation of intersecting inequalities. They will be expected to teach classes on American Ethnic Minorities, Quantitative Research Methods, and Social Theory and develop undergraduate classes based on their own research interests.
Candidates will be expected to fulfill the following responsibilities and duties:
- teach undergraduate Sociology classes in the core areas of Race, Quantitative Methods, and Social Theory
- conduct ongoing research in related fields
- publish in scholarly venues
- supervise senior projects for sociology majors
- contribute to the university’s mission, “Learn by Doing”
- participate constructively in university life and undergraduate education.
Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, our faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research/professional development (including publication), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The teaching/advising load averages 12 units per quarter (with course load reductions in each of the first two years to help establish one’s professional development activities), with correspondingly reasonable expectations for scholarship and service. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
PhD in Sociology.
Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.

Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment. Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Social Sciences Department is in the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly and consists of faculty in Anthropology, Geography, and Sociology. The department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology and Geography.
