Mini-Conference: Race and Organizations

When researchers analyze race and organizations they primarily do so at the individual level. Sociological studies confirm that organizations produce inequality or systematic disparities between racial groups. In particular, all else being equal, Whites have far better experiences and outcomes with the organizations – firms, schools, hospitals, etc. – that we have come to depend upon for our livelihood than racial minorities.

Call for Papers: 

Consequences of Change in Healthcare for Organizations, Workers, and Patients 
A Mini-Conference and Avenue for Peer-Reviewed Publication

deadline extended to September 1st, 2018 

This call invites papers for a conference and subsequent special issue of Work & Occupations devoted to the consequences of change in healthcare for organizations, workers, and patients. Scholars interested in participating should submit a completed paper to the conference organizers and special issue co-editors Ariel C. Avgar (Cornell), Adrienne E. Eaton (Rutgers), Rebecca Givan (Rutgers), and Adam Seth Litwin (Cornell) by September 1st, 2018. Authors whose papers are accepted will be invited to a conference sponsored by the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University and the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University to be held in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on January 9-11, 2019.

Papers presented at this conference should be suitable for submission to external reviewers. Based on the organizers’ recommendations, discussions at the conference, and fit with the special issue, a subset of authors will be asked to submit their papers to Work & Occupations with the expectation that their papers will be published in the special issue once they pass the external review process. Papers that reviewers deem of good quality that are not selected for the special issue will be considered for publication in a regular issue of Work & Occupations.

Fellow Travelers on Different Roads: The Intersections of Economic Sociology and Organizations, Occupations, and Work

The industrial revolution fundamentally transformed society.  Central to this transformation was the growing role of work, organizations, and markets in daily life. It is no coincidence that the discipline of sociology was founded in this era, and that the study of these institutions continues to be at the core of both the Economic Sociology and Organizations, Occupations, and Work sections.

This mini-conference aims to bring together members of both sections to facilitate dialogue within and across our fields. The event will highlight work that advances research in Economic Sociology and Organizations, Occupations, and Work, using a diverse set of theoretical and methodological approaches.  We invite research that explores core themes from both domains, as well as research that develops the intersections and tensions between the two.  We are especially interested in new work that engages with emerging phenomena and/or uses novel perspectives. We hope that the conference will bring together economic sociologists and scholars of organizations, occupations, and work from across institutional divides, including those in sociology departments, as well as in schools of management, engineering, public policy, and industrial and labor relations.  Thematic sessions will be determined based on submissions.
