New Publication: “Homosociality, Femmephobia and Homonationalism” by Tair Karazi-Presler and Gilly Hartal

Karazi-Presler, T., and G. Hartal. 2026. “Homosociality, Femmephobia and Homonationalism: Gender Regimes of Valuation in LGBTQ+ Organizations.” Journal of Homosexuality, 1–26. https://doi.org/10.1080/00918369.2026.2743680.

The article examines how gendered power relations persist within LGBTQ+ organizations despite their commitments to inclusion and equality. Drawing on interviews with lesbian, bisexual, and transgender women in leadership positions in Tel Aviv, we show how gay men’s homosocial networks shape access to organizational influence, visibility, and legitimacy. We pay particular attention to the role of femmephobia and embodied forms of intimacy in sustaining these hierarchies, and to how women challenge them.
