Call for Submissions: The 2023 Annual Junior Theorists Symposium!

The 17th Junior Theorists Symposium (JTS) is now open to new submissions. The JTS is a conference featuring the work of emerging sociologists engaged in theoretical work, broadly defined. Sponsored in part by the Theory Section of the ASA, the conference has provided a platform for the work of early-career sociologists since 2005. We especially welcome submissions that broaden the practice of theory beyond its traditional themes, topics, and disciplinary function.

The symposium will be held as an in-person event on Thursday, August 17 prior to the 2023 ASA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA.

It is our honor to announce that Claire Decoteau (University of Illinois-Chicago), Greta Krippner (University of Michigan), and Victor Ray (University of Iowa) will serve as discussants for this year’s symposium. Daniel Hirschman (Cornell University), winner of the 2022 Junior Theorist Award, will deliver a keynote address. Finally, the symposium will include an after-panel titled “Why Theorize?” This panel will seek to bring scholars, thinkers, and doers into conversation to explore convergences, tensions, and a range of possible responses to the question: why theorize?

We invite all ABD graduate students, recent PhDs, postdocs, and assistant professors who received their PhDs from 2019 onwards to submit up to a three-page précis (800-1000 words). The précis should include the key theoretical contribution of the paper and a general outline of the argument.

Please note that the précis must be for a paper that is not under review or forthcoming at a journal.

As in previous years, there is no pre-specified theme for the conference. Papers will be grouped into sessions based on emergent themes and discussants’ areas of interest and expertise. We invite submissions from all substantive areas of sociology, we especially encourage papers that are works-in-progress and would benefit from the discussions at JTS.

Please remove all identifying information from your précis and submit it via the Google form below. Wendy Li (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Jon Shaffer (Johns Hopkins University) will review the anonymized submissions. You can also contact them at juniortheorists@gmail.com with any questions. By early April, we will extend 9 invitations to present at JTS 2023. Please plan to share a full paper by July 7, 2023. 

*Presenters should plan to attend in-person, though this may change based on the Covid-19 pandemic.

Call for Papers: Organizations and City-level Outcomes at EGOS

“Cites as Sites and Drivers of Organizational Action” at the European Group of Organizational Studies (EGOS) Colloquium 2019
We would like to invite you to submit your current work to our sub-theme on Cities as Sites and Drivers of Organizational Action (#43) at the EGOS Colloquium 2019, which will be held in Edinburgh on July 4–6, 2019 (call for papers attached and online).
 
The sub-theme welcomes submissions of high-quality research on cities as arenas of and actors in organizing investigated from the perspectives of organization studies, management, sociology, geography, and political science, among others. While we have a preference for empirical, comparative research that neither relegates cities to a passive backdrop of organizational behavior, nor treats organizations as a derivate of local communities and markets, we are also open to other investigations on cities as sites and drivers of organizational action. This research will likely analyze processes, such as branding, collaborating, competing, learning, participating, and coordinating across sectors.

When researchers analyze race and organizations they primarily do so at the individual level. Sociological studies confirm that organizations produce inequality or systematic disparities between racial groups. In particular, all else being equal, Whites have far better experiences and outcomes with the organizations – firms, schools, hospitals, etc. – that we have come to depend upon for our livelihood than racial minorities.

Call for Papers: ESS 2019 Session on “Gender and Work”

This paper session, titled “Gender and Work,” invites theoretical and/or empirical research that explores gender gaps in work outcomes and/or gender inequality in the workplace. We are mainly interested in papers exploring the centrality of work to the reproduction of gendered inequalities. Papers that draw on a variety of theoretical perspectives and workplace contexts to explore these themes are especially welcome. Likewise, we welcome papers with policy implications on how to improve the workplace environment from a gender perspective, and its influences on other non-work domains (such as family).

Marxist Organization Studies: Enlightening the Future: The Challenge for Organizations

In 2019, we aim to build on the success of the eight previous EGOS Marxist studies sub-themes in bringing together people who share an interest in drawing on Marx’s ideas to advance management and organization studies. The organizers of the EGOS 2019 Colloquium have called for papers on the theme “Enlightening the future” and Marxism, being one of more important children of the Enlightenment, has much to contribute to this theme. With its aspiration to bring human reason to bear on the organization of production—displacing the “anarchy” of the market and “despotism” of capital—Marxist work is particularly well placed to contribute to the examination of challenge to organizations posed by the Enlightenment and its current impasse.

Professional occupations have undergone enormous changes in recent years. Markets for many professional services have globalized.  Information technology has markedly transformed the work that professionals and knowledge workers do.  Organizations employing professionals have grown larger and more bureaucratic –and in many cases, they have outsourced core functions to suppliers of professional and para-professional labor located in the global south. New occupations such as “data scientists” are making claims to professional status, while members of many older professions are forced to market themselves in ever more entrepreneurial ways.  Some professionals have become the consiglieres of large corporations, dedicated to facilitating their pursuit of business interests, raising questions about their professional independence.  Some professions (such as journalism) have experienced wrenching technological changes that have eroded the autonomy (and the jobs) of many practitioners. Moreover, inequality within professions has grown sharply; in higher education, for example, tenured and tenure-track professors account for a shrinking minority of university faculty. In the face of these and other changes, traditional forms of professional self-regulation have been called into question, with far-reaching consequences for the social order as a whole.

This call invites papers for a conference and subsequent special issue of Work & Occupations devoted to the consequences of change in healthcare for organizations, workers, and patients. Scholars interested in participating should submit a completed paper to the conference organizers and special issue co-editors Ariel C. Avgar (Cornell), Adrienne E. Eaton (Rutgers), Rebecca Givan (Rutgers), and Adam Seth Litwin (Cornell) by September 1st, 2018. Authors whose papers are accepted will be invited to a conference sponsored by the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University and the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University to be held in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on January 9-11, 2019.

Papers presented at this conference should be suitable for submission to external reviewers. Based on the organizers’ recommendations, discussions at the conference, and fit with the special issue, a subset of authors will be asked to submit their papers to Work & Occupations with the expectation that their papers will be published in the special issue once they pass the external review process. Papers that reviewers deem of good quality that are not selected for the special issue will be considered for publication in a regular issue of Work & Occupations.

Call for Papers: Journal of Sociology special issue on inequalities in the gig economy

Special edition of the Journal of Sociology 2019 on inequalities in the gig economy era: gender and generation challenges edited by Brendan Churchill, Signe Ravn and Lyn Craig, University of Melbourne. The special edition will focus on the intersecting implications for gender and generational inequalities in the ‘gig economy’ era, a term which we use to describe the contemporary labour market characterised by precarious employment and new (digital) forms of job seeking and entrepreneurship that expose workers to greater financial risks, social insecurities and inequalities. It will also consider the gendered dimensions of educational participation outcomes in the light of these changed labour market conditions. Deadline for submission of a 300-word abstract for consideration: 8 April 2018.
